💡 Welcome to My Creative Laboratory
Field notes on writing, creativity, and the messy business of being a creator.
Hey! 👋 You probably know me from around here.
I’m the writer behind ✍️ Make Writing Your Job, that bestselling Substack you might already be subscribed to — the one with the writing job board, live classes, and tactical, no-BS strategies for making writing your job. (And a high-paying job at that!)
I’m also a bestselling author of fiction and nonfiction books, and a seven-figure freelance writer.
Maybe you’ve read my book Six-Figure Freelance Writer if you’re building your writing career. Or one of my fiction projects — The Ash Trials or The Nomad Detective — if you’re the type who likes your storytelling with an edge.
Or maybe you just heard there’s a new corner of the internet where I’m about to overshare in the best possible way.
Either way — welcome.
🧬 What’s Cooking Here at Sutoscience?
Think of this as my laboratory.
Unlike Make Writing Your Job, which is structured, polished, and designed to help you land those sweet high-paying gigs — Sutoscience is messy on purpose.
It’s field notes.
It’s half-formed hypotheses.
It’s me pulling back the curtain.
Here’s what you’ll find here:
Behind-the-scenes looks at how I run my writing business.
The real process of launching books (including the unsexy bits).
Personal essays about being a writer in the creator economy.
Commentary on the weird, shifting line between writer, creator, and creative entrepreneur.
Thoughts on the rise of the “creator CEO” model — and whether it’s a revolution or a rebrand.
My honest take on where all of this is headed — through my lens as a working writer.
🤔 Why Start Another Substack?
✍️ Make Writing Your Job is doing its thing — structured, streamlined, professional.
It’s become about:
✅ Connecting writers to high-paying opportunities.
✅ Giving you the insights you need to actually land those jobs.
✅ Staying laser-focused on helping you make writing your job.
And that’s great. I’m going to keep growing it.
But I didn’t want to dilute it with personal essays, behind-the-scenes rambles, or my rants about AI or creator economy trends.
That’s what Sutoscience is for.
I wanted a place where I can write to you from an airport lounge or my apartment in San Francisco — like right now, for example, I’m writing this just before jumping on a plane to Las Vegas to hang out with my partner Kyle for a few days and go see Backstreet Boys at the Sphere. (Hell yeah.)
This is the space for that kind of unvarnished, immediate, personal writing.
🌌 It’s Gonna Get Weird (In a Good Way)
I want to talk about the philosophy of being a working writer.
How we keep our sense of play in a world of constant monetization.
How we keep experimenting — testing hypotheses about creative work, audience-building, and business models without losing our souls to optimization.
How AI is changing everything (including us).
(By the way — I wrote more about my views on AI over at ✍️ Make Writing Your Job. You can read that here.)
Sutoscience is for that conversation.
💌 What You’ll Get (and How to Support It)
Most of what I post here will be free.
But if you want to support this work — to help me carve out the time to write these essays and share these behind-the-scenes looks — there’s a paid subscription option.
👉 Eventually I’ll start paywalling the archives.
👉 But I want most new posts to stay free so this feels like an open conversation.
If you do go paid — thank you. It really does help me keep showing up and building things for you, both here and over at ✍️ Make Writing Your Job.
🥂 TL;DR — Welcome In
This is Sutoscience:
My lab.
My field notes.
My real-time reflections on building a writing career in the chaos of the creator economy.
If you’re here, it means you’re curious too.
And I’m glad you’re my guest.
Thanks for stepping inside the lab with me.
