💡 My Travel Guide for Beijing, China
What to eat, where to go, and where to stay in Beijing, China.
Hello from China!
I’m writing to you from a high-speed train on my way to Shanghai, having just written this travel guide on Beijing, where I’ve been for the past week!
I’ve been really surprised by a lot of aspects of China so far, and that’s part of why I decided to spend an entire month here. (If you’ve emailed me lately, you’ve seen my “OOO: Eating Hotpot” message!)
Building a thriving career as a freelance writer, author, and Substacker has allowed me to put basically my entire life on pause while I frolic from tea shop to tea shop. (Chagee, pictured above from the Beijing train station, has tea that is just unreal.)
It’s also the reason why I’ve been able to visit The Great Wall of China on a random rainy weekday, with no tourists in sight as the clouds parted and the sun showed up for us.
Despite being a freelance writer for over a decade (!!!) it still hits me how grateful I am to be able to travel when I want. I just let my clients know I’ll be gone for a bit, throw up my email autoresponder, and commence visiting wonders of the world.
It’s also been amazing to see the wins of our community members over on my other Substack ✍️ Make Writing Your Job, where writers have landed work from our writing job board that has allowed them to travel the world on a whim. (In our recent panel, memoir ghostwriter and copywriter Ben shared how he’s going to spend some time in Berlin!)
This life is waiting for you — all you have to do is take the leap and start applying to freelance writing jobs, pitch calls, and other writing opportunities.
I’m also celebrating finishing the last draft of Write for Money and Power: The Anti-Starving Aritst’s Guide to Becoming a Seven-Figure Writer. This book has been such a labor of love, as I want you to have all of my best advice for what it takes to create a fulfilling (and insanely profitable) career as a writer. If you want to apply for an advance reader copy (ARC) ahead of the book’s January 12, 2026 release, you can do so here.
Hope you’re having a great start to your week, writers!
