💡 My Handpicked Gifts for Writers, Readers, and Romantasy Obsessed Friends
If she's reading Brimstone this weekend, this gift guide is for her. And: more writerly gifts for all of the different literary folk in your life.
Hey Sutoscientists,
My Christmas list is microscopic. Think: a restock of my favorite coffee, natural-fiber leggings that don’t feel like wearing a plastic bag, maybe a book or two, and some loose-leaf tea that smells like I’m trespassing in a botanical garden.
But don’t let the minimalist thing fool you. I love shopping. I love window shopping even more. It’s my Olympic sport of procrastination. If doom-scrolling is cardio, then cart-scrolling is my Pilates.
So if you’ve got a writer in your life who is impossible to shop for — the sort of person who has Opinions about pens and treats bookstores like cathedrals — I’ve assembled a gift guide of things they’ll actually be delighted to unwrap.
So here’s the list, with a variety of gifts — most under $50:
☕️ Gifts for Writers Who Like Caffeine
I have been ~ obsessed ~ with these NOLA Chicory Instant Coffee packs from Blue Bottle. You just put the packets into a cup with some water and a little bit of milk and you can whisk it away with a frother to get perfect coffee every morning. My recommended milk of choice is this super smooth, super creamy Elmhurst Cashew Milk that is very clean in terms of ingredients with just filtered water and cashews in it.
If you want to get fancy, you can gift the instant coffee with the Ginger Biscuit Syrup and a nice mug for your favorite caffeineaholic.
I visited Studio Arhoj in Copenhagen, Denmark this past spring, and I brought home two of their gorgeous mugs! At $54 these stoneware mugs are a bit pricey, but the robin’s egg blue color is simply gorgeous and they’re made by hand in-studio by artisans who shape each one slightly differently. It’s a great gift for a writer who has 3-4 beverages on their desk at all times — and want a touch of Danish hygge to warm up their coffee.
📖 Gifts for Obsessive Readers (Under $50) That Aren’t More Books
This book-shaped light for $22 on Amazon is a great gift for a self-proclaimed book lover on your list who wants everyone to know.
At exactly $50, this Uncommon Goods bookworm set is nice for a reader with lots of nostalgia for libraries.
I love plants, and this book lover succulent is an easy-to-care-for plant option for $14 on Amazon.
If you have a reader or writer in your life who loves the finer, more artistic things and is obsessed with stationary, then you may want to consider getting them Washi Tape and a nice bullet journal. There are a lot of retailers that sell combos of these, but they’re very pretty and feel more elevated compared to your standard gift.
These $12 blue light blocking glasses are great for the Kindle reader who struggles to go to sleep in the bright light of their e-reading device :)
Got a reader on your list who only reads “classic” literature? This Kate Spade tote bag might speak to them and is $28 on Amazon.
If you want to poke fun at the one reader who can’t put their book down, this “I have no shelf control” t-shirt is a fun gift they can wear when they want to opt out of society and disappear into a book.
This motivation poster for writers — $13 on Etsy — is a nice addition to any home office where pep talks are welcome.
I love Blind Dates with a Book as they’re a fun way to get introduced to new books — and here’s one curated by a small business on Etsy for $24, with different genre categories.
🎁 Gifts for Romantasy Readers & Writers
This Night Mini Dress from Ameli Boutique is $45 and is giving Feyre in the Night Court vibes (IYKYK!).
Romantasy readers are often astrology girlies, and this $140 Zodiac Necklace from Mejuri is a cute custom gift. I have several pieces from Mejuri I’ve worn for years, and they’re pretty durable as far as jewelry goes.
In the same vein, Kyle got me this miniature tarot deck I love that’s easy to pack in a bag or bring to your next writer’s retreat. It’s $14 on Amazon and a great stocking stuffer.
